This space was created to present the vision, values, and approach of Cooperativa Ecosistemica Iblea, a Sicilian agricultural cooperative specializing in the cultivation of organic, ecosystem-grown avocados.
The cooperative was founded in 2023 by a group of professionals brought together by a shared passion for sustainable agriculture and tropical crops. Today, we grow our organic avocados in south-eastern Sicily, in an area with a strong agricultural vocation, rich in biodiversity and rural traditions.
Our goal is to demonstrate that even a crop often considered unsustainable can be grown with full respect for the environment and natural resources.
What Is Ecosystem-Based Farming
Ecosystem-based farming is a production model that integrates agricultural crops within natural ecosystems, preserving their biological balance.
It is rooted in the principles of organic farming while broadening its perspective: combining agricultural production with the protection of habitats, biodiversity, and natural cycles.
Farming in an ecosystem-based way means introducing a crop while ensuring its coexistence with spontaneous plant species, insects, and local wildlife.
For this reason, one of our guiding principles is:
“There are no weeds — spontaneous plants are part of the precious balance of cultivation.”
In our daily work, ecosystem-based farming is built on three core pillars:
Biodiversity and integration. Spontaneous plants are not removed: they contribute to soil fertility, encourage the presence of beneficial insects, and increase the stability of the agricultural ecosystem.
Living, undisturbed soil. We do not carry out deep ploughing, nor do we use herbicides or pesticides. The top layer of the soil remains intact and biologically active.
Natural balance between species. Bees and other pollinating insects ensure pollination, while birds, reptiles, and small animals find shelter and nesting areas within the avocado orchards.
In our vision, there are no “useful” or “harmful” species, but biological communities in balance with one another. It is this balance that guides every decision we make.
Extending this model to other crops represents one of the cooperative’s future goals.

Avocado, appreciated worldwide for its nutritional value and distinctive taste, is often associated with environmental concerns related to high water consumption and intensive land use.
We grow our avocados using sustainable farming techniques that significantly reduce water requirements. Thanks to practices such as micro-irrigation and subsurface irrigation, our avocado orchards now consume water in amounts comparable to citrus groves.
In this way, our fruit becomes a concrete example of balance between agricultural production and environmental protection, showing that an organic, ecosystem-grown avocado that respects natural resources is truly possible.
